- 2 cans (28 oz each) whole San Marzano tomatoes
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and dried oregano; cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the canned tomatoes with their juice. Crush the tomatoes gently with a spoon and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Season generously with salt and pepper, adding red pepper flakes if desired. Let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes for rich flavors.
- Just before serving, stir in the fresh basil leaves and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
- Serve over your favorite pasta and enjoy!
