Description

Savory French onion meatballs are a comforting dish featuring tender meatballs infused with sweet caramelized onions and simmered in a rich broth. Perfect for cozy dinners or impressing guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 cup sweet yellow onions, finely diced (about 2 medium onions)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. 2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, garlic, onions, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  3. 3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté remaining onions until golden brown (about 10 minutes). Stir in thyme and soy sauce; simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  4. 4. Form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes until browned.
  5. 5. Pour beef broth into the skillet with sautéed onions. Add bay leaf and bring to a simmer.
  6. 6. Once baked, add meatballs to the simmering broth sauce. Let them soak for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for leaner options.
  • Experiment with fresh herbs like rosemary for added flavor.
  • Ensure not to overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
