- 14 oz canned crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Prepare your ingredients by chopping the onion and mincing the garlic.
- Cook the penne pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente, according to package instructions. Drain and reserve some pasta water.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Sauté the onions and garlic until fragrant and translucent.
- Crumble the Italian sausage into the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes and red pepper flakes; simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Add cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing everything together. If too thick, add reserved pasta water to achieve desired consistency.
- Finish by stirring in fresh basil and Parmesan just before serving.
